I obviously can’t include an actual sample of academic material I’ve ghostwritten, or my client would, like, get in trouble. (And nobody would ever trust me to discreetly do their homework for them again.)
As far as I can tell, Peter Gabriel wrote this song after a vivid dream, and considering when it was recorded, I doubt the idea of mind uploading as such could have possibly inspired him, even subconsciously. Nevertheless, the lyrics have become eerily topical in retrospect -- and the text does support a reading which involves a farewell to the flesh in this context.
The purpose of such an essay, then, is not to try to ‘decode’ what might have been in Gabriel’s mind at the time he wrote the lyrics, but to explore what it is about his words that evokes such vivid associations in mine.
